How to start meditation and love every minute of it
The biggest problem with meditation is that it's boring, difficult, and too airy fairy. It doesn't actually do anything, or it takes too long to see benefits. That's what people usually say anyway. Today, I'd like to clarify some common misconceptions about meditation so you can love every minute of it.
Misconception 1. Meditation is about not thinking and having a blank mind. First of all, that's almost impossible, and secondly, that's not what meditation is about. Meditation is simply being aware of the present moment and observing what arises within our sense and our mind.
What are you hearing? What are you thinking and feeling? Simply being aware of what's happening and observing it without judgement is meditation.
Misconception 2. Meditation is difficult and uncomfortable. Meditation doesn't mean you must sit in the lotus position, or even be crossing your legs. In fact, how you're sitting is up to you as long as you're comfortable and focused.
So, sit on a chair or on your couch, and sit up right so your energy is directed upwards. Most importantly, make sure you're comfortable!
Misconception 3. Meditation is boring and useless. The point of meditation is to notice what arises the moment it does. This becomes a superpower because we are no longer reacting to external stimuli. Instead of reacting with anger when someone offends us, we notice the words being said and the intepretation were making. Then notice how it makes you feel.
By being present enough to observe thing as they happen, you'll be granted the option to decide how you wish to respond instead of simply reacting habitually.
I hope this provides some clarity about the intention of meditation and how it's practiced. It's about developing our sense of awareness and even mindedness so we are more in control of ourselves, our emotions, and our actions.
So remember, don’t try to clear your mind of thoughts, it’s impossible. Sit comfortably in anyway you wish, and develop your sense of awareness of the things that are happening around and within you.
Thanks for watching and may we all make time for a little daily meditation.
